Gaze upon Dannoura from the Suiten Gate and explore the history of the Kanmon Strait

About this spot

A shrine dedicated to Emperor Antoku (安徳天皇), who entered the water at a young age during the Battle of Dannoura. The vermillion-painted "Suiten Gate" (水天門) stands facing the Kanmon Strait and is one of Shimonoseki's representative landmarks. The vermillion-colored ornate gate, reminiscent of a Dragon Palace, stands in vivid contrast to the blue of the strait and has become a classic photo spot. Within the shrine grounds, you'll also find the ruins of Amidaji Temple (阿弥陀寺跡), known as the setting for "Earless Hoichi," offering enjoyment for history enthusiasts of all ages. Viewing the Kanmon Strait where tonight's fireworks will launch from this location during daytime ties together the day's narrative. The grounds are not extensive and the time required is relatively short, making it an easy stop to incorporate before or after lunch.

Date & time: 8/13 (Thu) 19:35–20:50

Tips

Just next door, Mimososo River Park offers views of the stone monument marking the Battle of Dannoura and the Kanmon Bridge, making it recommended to visit both.
