An ancient Sotozen Buddhist temple located in Oura, Uonuma City, renowned as a masterpiece for its intricate wooden carvings by Ishikawa Uncho from the late Edo period, known as "Echigo's Michelangelo." The carvings covering the transoms and pillars of the Kaisan-do Hall depict scenes from nature and narratives with overwhelming density that takes your breath away. The quiet grounds surrounded by towering cryptomeria trees provide a refreshing, cool atmosphere in early September that creates a pleasant moment. Taking time in such a serene place to center yourself before the evening's grand fireworks will enrich your entire day.

Tips

Approximately 20 minutes by car from downtown Ojiya; incorporating this route on the way to Katakaicho allows you to visit efficiently. Admission is approximately 500 yen for adults (subject to change; confirm before visiting). Some areas of the temple grounds have uneven footing, so wear comfortable walking shoes. If you depart by 4:00 PM, you can reach Katakaicho with ample time.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes required. Viewing the carved details in the afternoon dappled sunlight is highly recommended.
