Watch Dedicated Fireworks Including the World's Largest Four-Shaku Tamaya, Approximately 15,000 Fireworks (Combined Total Over 2 Days)

About this spot

The Katakaimatsu Asahara Shrine Autumn Grand Festival Dedicated Fireworks is held annually on September 9 and 10 (September 11 and 12 in 2026) in Katakaicho, Ojiya City, and is one of Japan's premier dedicated fireworks festivals. Fireworks including the world's largest four-shaku tamaya (a spherical firework approximately 120cm in diameter that opens to a burst diameter of approximately 800m) are launched successively into the night sky from the hillside behind Asahara Shrine. The defining characteristic is that it is not a commercial show but rather a form of "dedication" where local residents and natives contribute fireworks carrying their own sentiments—family joy, life milestones, and remembrance of loved ones—with the donors' names and messages announced with each launch. The atmosphere of deep bass resonating through the mountain village mixed with the quiet emotion of local viewers is something that can only be experienced at this festival. A total of approximately 15,000 fireworks are launched over the 2-day period.

Tips

The venue is on the hillside behind Asahara Shrine, and viewing is free. However, traffic restrictions are in place around the area, and use of shuttle buses and designated parking is mandatory; be sure to check Ojiya City's official website for the latest traffic information. The return journey after the finale will be extremely congested as all viewers depart simultaneously, so plan with ample time. The mountain village at night in September cools significantly, so bring a jacket or cardigan.
