About this spot

This park was developed on the ruins of Nakamura Castle, the residence of the Soma clan throughout the Edo period, and the name Baryo comes from Baryo Castle, another name for Nakamura Castle. Traces of the castle remain throughout, including a water-filled moat, earthen ramparts, stone walls, and the main gate, and following the path along the moat lets you enjoy a historical walk through the old castle town of Soma. Soma Nakamura Shrine and Soma Shrine stand within the park grounds, and the scenery created by the deep green trees and the moat's water surface has a calm, tranquil atmosphere. In spring, cherry trees color the edge of the moat, making this one of Soma's leading spots for flowers, and the changing scenery through the seasons is one of its pleasures. As a place connected to Soma Nomaoi, the spirit of this old samurai town still lives on today, and taking a full loop around, together with your shrine visit, lets you soak up plenty of Soma's history before heading to the sea.

Tips

Located in the same corner of the castle ruins as Soma Nakamura Shrine, you can walk straight over after your shrine visit. The park mainly consists of gravel and dirt paths, so shoes that are easy to walk in are reassuring. Some stretches along the moat have little shade, so remember a hat and something to drink in hot weather.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The quiet hours of the morning are best for strolling. It's especially pleasant in seasons when the greenery is at its best
