About this spot

This is a mountain stream flowing through Shin-Yabakei (深耶馬溪) in Yabakei-machi, Nakatsu City. The starting point is a signboard a few minutes' walk from the Hitome Hakkei (一目八景) observation deck toward Kusu. A roughly 1-kilometer promenade runs alongside the stream, letting you enjoy the clear Nunome stream flowing over a single slab of bedrock, as well as beautiful scenery with a series of pools and waterfalls. Watch your footing, as there are slippery spots and fallen trees along the way. It's a good idea to walk this cool, mountain-ringed waterside during the day before the evening fireworks.

Tips

Just under 10 minutes by car from Saruto Sentsubokyo. The promenade has some slippery spots and fallen trees, so wear comfortable walking shoes and watch your footing. When the sun is strong, it's reassuring to take breaks in the shade as you go.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes needed. The stream-side path, shaded by plenty of trees, stays relatively cool and easy to walk even in the afternoon.
