Asahiyama Memorial Park Water Plaza (旭山記念公園)

The Asahiyama Memorial Park Water Plaza is a free water play area in Asahiyama Memorial Park in Chuo Ward, Sapporo. It is usually open from Saturday, April 25 to Saturday, October 31, from 10:00 to 20:00 (the City of Sapporo lists it as late April to around the end of October). The cascade, where water falls in tiers, catches the eye, and the shallows below it are built so children can play freely. An observation plaza sits right beside it, so adults can watch over them from a bench while looking out at the Sapporo cityscape, a way of spending time that is typical of this park. With restrooms and a resthouse on hand, both changing and eating can be done inside the park. The long season, from spring through autumn, means you can plan a visit on weekends outside the summer holidays too, a strength no other water play spot has.

Tips

The stones of the cascade get wet and slippery, so have children wear water play sandals. Because the park is on high ground, the wind turns cold in the evening. Dry off and change into dry clothes early. It stays open until 8:00 p.m., so in the season of long days you can also plan to watch the city lights at dusk before heading home. The parking lot can get crowded in the evening hours.

Best time to visit

Arrive at 2:00 p.m. and you can play for a full three hours, finishing in the cool evening breeze.
