About this spot

An area inside Midorigaoka Park (緑ヶ丘公園) where a broad lawn spreads out in every direction. Here an enormous bench said to be the longest in Japan cuts across the grass, running on so far that you cannot see the end of it. Just sitting down and gazing toward the far end gives you a bodily sense of how vast the Tokachi (十勝) region is, an experience that photographs struggle to convey. There is little to block your path on the lawn, making it an ideal spot for children who want to run around. Being able to move after the quiet time in the museum gives the day a good rhythm.

Tips

There is little shade from the sun, so be sure to bring a hat and drinks. If you plan to sit on the grass, a picnic sheet makes it much more comfortable. Keep the stay to about 40 minutes and save energy for the afternoon water play. Parking is available at several points in Midorigaoka Park, so you can leave the car at the museum and walk over.
