About this spot

This ancient shrine sits in the Ō district of Tawaramoto Town and is commonly known as Ō Shrine (多神社). Its founding dates back to before Tenpyo 1 (729), and its main hall consists of four buildings lined up east to west. All are built in the single-bay Kasuga style; the first and second halls are said to date from Kyōhō 20 (1735) and the third and fourth halls from the mid-18th century, and they are designated as Nara Prefecture cultural properties. Stopping by first thing in the morning, there are few people around, so you can spend a quiet moment here. Start by praying for a safe day here, then set off at your own pace.

Tips

Visiting the shrine is free. There are gravel paths within the grounds, so comfortable walking shoes are reassuring. The shrine office is not always open, so if you would like a goshuin (shrine stamp), check in advance. The farm roads around the shrine are narrow, so drive slowly.
