About this spot

This is the townhouse of Abumiya, a shipping agent in Sakata during the Edo period, and it is designated a National Historic Site. The distinctive roof of cedar bark held down by rows of stones is more impressive in person than you might imagine. Inside, a long narrow layout continues toward the back, and scenes of commerce are recreated with figures, so children can walk along following the story. It is within walking distance of the Homma Family Former Main Residence (本間家旧本邸), so comparing merchant architecture one after another is a pleasure unique to Sakata. The scale is small enough to see quickly, making it a good stop to round off the morning.

Tips

Please check opening hours, closing days, and admission fees in advance through the official information. There are earthen floors and level changes, so leaving a stroller at the entrance may make moving around easier. Nakamachi Mall is only a short walk away, which makes the trip to the afternoon water play easy.

About 40 minutes. Being indoors, it also suits the hours when the sun grows strong
