Shinagawa Historical Museum (品川区立品川歴史館)

A museum in Oi, Shinagawa Ward, that conveys the ward's history. One of its main pillars is the display on the Omori Shell Mound (大森貝塚), where you can see the course of the excavation, the earthenware unearthed and how the shell layers look, all in one place. Learning that archaeology in Japan began here while standing before the real objects is a valuable experience. There are also exhibits on Shinagawa-juku (品川宿) and on modern Shinagawa, letting you follow the area's changes in order. The Omori Shell Mound Site Garden (大森貝塚遺跡庭園) is just a short walk away, so this is ideal preparation for the afternoon site visit.

大森貝塚遺跡庭園霧の噴水（水遊び）は、品川区の大森貝塚遺跡庭園にある無料の水遊びスポットです。ここは日本の考古学のはじまりとされる国史跡・大森貝塚を整備した庭園で、園内には地層をイメージした回廊があり、貝の層がどのように積み重なっているかを目で見て学べます。中央広場では1時間に2回、霧を発生させる噴水が動き、あたり一面が白い霧に包まれます。プールのように水につかるのではなく、霧の中を走り抜ける遊び方なので、水が苦手な子どもでも参加しやすいのが特徴です。区の公式ページに稼働期間の明記はなく、通年で動く想定ですが、実際の運転状況は出発前に確認してください。料金は無料です。

Tips

霧を浴びると地面がぬれて滑りやすくなるため、着替えの用意が推奨されています。すべりにくい靴かサンダルを履かせ、走り回るときは足元に気をつけましょう。稼働期間や噴射の時間帯は公式に明記されていないので、出発前に品川区の公式ページで確認してください。史跡を整備した庭園なので、石碑や展示の周辺では走らないよう子どもに伝えておきましょう。涼しい季節は霧を浴びると体が冷えるため、すぐ羽織れるものを持っていくと安心です。

Tips

Check the opening days, opening hours, closed days and admission on the official Shinagawa Ward page in advance. The galleries are a place for quiet viewing, so tell children not to run. The captions involve a lot of text, so starting with the visual corners such as earthenware and models keeps children interested. There is a rest area facing the garden where you can pause between galleries.
