Ikegami Honmon-ji Temple is the head temple of the Nichiren sect, with vast grounds on high ground in Ikegami, Ota City. The 96-step stone stairway continuing from the approach path is a satisfying climb, and the view once you reach the top is a rewarding experience even for children. The grounds retain a five-story pagoda built in the early Edo period, and the tree-lined approach path stays relatively cool to walk even in midsummer. Fewer worshippers are around in the morning, and the quiet atmosphere is the advantage of this time of day. Ahead of the afternoon's water play, start the day by first getting a feel for the origins of this place called Ikegami.

Tips

The steps are tall, so hold small children's hands while climbing. With a stroller, using the detour slope is safer. Letting children know beforehand that the grounds are a place for quiet helps everyone get around calmly. There are vending machines, but shops are limited, so bring plenty of drinks.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. The morning, before the sun gets strong, is comfortable.
