Ōdate: A Walk Through the Akita Dog Village and Hachiko's Hometown
A one-day course to meet fluffy Akita dogs in Ōdate City, Akita Prefecture, the hometown of Hachiko the loyal dog. At "Akita Dog no Sato," modeled after the original Taisho-era Shibuya Station building, meet real Akita dogs in person. At lunch, savor the signature "Tori-meshi" at the long-established Hanazens station bento shop near the station. In the afternoon, stroll through Katsuki Park (桂城公園) on the ruins of Ōdate Castle and trace the history of Akita dogs and Hachiko at Akita Inu Kaikan (秋田犬会館), the headquarters of the Akita Dog Preservation Society. Finish with a visit to the rose-scented Ishida Rose Garden. With moderate walking distance, this hometown walk is perfect for three generations of families, including grandparents who love dogs.
