Akizuki Castle Ruins and Sugi no Baba: A Stroll Through Chikuzen's Little Kyoto Castle Town
This is a day-long walking course through Akizuki, a castle town nestled in the foothills of Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Known as "Chikuzen's Little Kyoto," Akizuki retains Edo-period street layouts around Akizuki Castle Ruins (秋月城跡), with its Black Gate and stone walls still standing. Wander along Sugi no Baba Street (杉の馬場), famous for its cherry blossom avenue, and enjoy castle town lunch at a teahouse serving kuzu soumen. Take commemorative photos at Akizuki Megane-bashi (秋月目鏡橋), with its granite arch spanning the Notori River, then rest with freshly made kuzu mochi and kuzu-yu at Hirokyu Kuzu Honpo (廣久葛本舗), established in the Edo period. To finish, drive down to the countryside to see Asakura's Sanren Suisha (三連水車), three water wheels that have continuously irrigated the paddies for over 220 years. Listen to the gentle sound of the slowly turning wheels, browse the adjacent farmers' market for souvenirs, and complete your day immersed in the history and bounty of Asakura.
