Kumamoto: A Refreshing Garden Stroll Through Suizenji Jojuen and Lake Ezu, the City of Water
Kumamoto is known as the "City of Water," with spring water from the Aso aquifer welling up throughout the city. This refreshing walking course takes you through Suizenji Jojuen and Lake Ezu, iconic symbols of the city, before enjoying the pleasures of the urban center. In the morning, savor garden beauty at Suizenji Jojuen (水前寺成趣園), a Momoyama-style promenade garden where artificial hills are reflected in clear spring water. Continue with a leisurely walk along the waterside of Lake Ezu (江津湖), a citizens' oasis created by spring water. For lunch, enjoy a meal and rooftop garden views at Sakura Machi Kumamoto (サクラマチクマモト), a large complex facility directly connected to the bus terminal. In the afternoon, experience art at the Kumamoto City Contemporary Art Museum, and in the evening, enjoy street food and shop for souvenirs at the Shimotori Arcade (下通商店街), one of Kyushu's longest covered shopping streets. This full day brings together water, greenery, and city strolling, capturing the essence of Kumamoto's charm.
