2026 Nankan Summer Festival Gion-san: A Full One-Day Course
This course lets you enjoy the whole of Nankan Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, the setting for the Nankan Summer Festival Gion-san (なんかん夏まつり ぎおんさん), over a full day. At midday, visit the historic Nankan Ochaya Site (南関御茶屋跡), once used even by feudal lords on their processions, and fill up on local specialties like Nankan somen (南関そうめん) noodles and Nankan-age (南関あげ) fried tofu at the Nankan Ikiiki Mura Special Products Center (特産品センター なんかん いきいき村). In the afternoon, stroll through the lush green grounds of Otsuyama Nature Park (大津山自然公園), and in the evening, have dinner at Sekimachi Shopping Street (関町商店街) while soaking up the atmosphere of a post town. Gion-san (ぎおんさん) is a local summer festival tied to the Gion Festival tradition, passed down around Yatsurugi Shrine (八剱神社) and Sekimachi Shopping Street, and in a typical year fireworks have closed out the festival starting at 20:05. Please check Nankan Town's official announcements for whether it will be held and further details. This is a one-day plan in Nankan Town where you can savor the historic atmosphere unique to a post town on a highway dating back to the Edo period.
