2026 Naegi Andon Festival: A Full-Day Course
This one-day course follows the 'Naegi Andon Festival' (苗木あんどん祭り), traditionally held every August 14th at the Naegi Elementary School grounds (苗木小学校グラウンド) in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture. In 2026, the main festival has been cancelled due to forecast bad weather, but the fireworks display is still scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM. By day, enjoy the massive boulders and sweeping views at Naegi Castle Ruins (苗木城跡), also known as the 'Castle in the Sky,' and learn about the Toyama clan, the castle's lords, at the Naegi Toyama Historical Museum (苗木遠山史料館). After strolling the old streets with their 'udatsu' fire walls in Nakatsugawa-juku (中津川宿), a former post town on the Nakasendo highway, unwind over dinner featuring Nakatsugawa specialties like kuri-kinton. It's a course that lets you savor both Nakatsugawa's history and a summer night sky in a single day.
