2026 Satsuma Kuroshio Kibaran Kai Makurazaki Port Festival: A Full One-Day Course

A full-day course to enjoy the first day of the “Satsuma Kuroshio Kibaran Kai Makurazaki Port Festival” (さつま黒潮 きばらん海 枕崎港まつり, Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, 2026, noon-10:00 p.m., around Makurazaki Port), a summer festival held in Makurazaki, a port town known as one of Japan's leading producers of dried bonito flakes. Start the morning at JR Makurazaki Station (枕崎駅), known as the southernmost starting station on Japan's mainland. A short walk away, tour Satsuma Shuzo Meiji-gura (薩摩酒造 明治蔵), a historic distillery representing local authentic shochu-making. Next, head over to Hinokami Park (火之神公園) and take a break in the sea breeze at this scenic spot overlooking Tategamiiwa (立神岩), a striking rock formation rising from the sea. Before the festival gets underway, stop by Makurazaki Osakana Center (枕崎お魚センター) for lunch made with freshly landed seafood and to finish your souvenir shopping. At noon, the first day of the summer festival, staged across the area around Makurazaki Port, finally opens. The appeal of this course is being able to leisurely enjoy the venue, lively with boats moored in the harbor and people coming and going, at your own pace from afternoon into the night.
