2026 Umekoji Park Kawara Asobiba (河原遊び場) Full-Day Course
In a large park within walking distance of Kyoto Station there is Kawara Asobiba (河原遊び場) in Umekoji Park (梅小路公園), a waterside spot where you can play for free. In a typical year the water runs from spring through autumn; the 2026 water-flow schedule has not been announced, but entry is free and there is no admission fee. The venue is Umekoji Park in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City, where an artificial stream and pond create a waterside plaza of babbling water and dappled sunlight. The flow is shallow, and the charm of the place is that children can play without any playground equipment, stepping from stone to stone or following the channel. The water is not drinkable, so tell children not to drink it, and rubber sandals for their feet will let them play with peace of mind. In the morning you visit To-ji Temple (東寺), which is within walking distance, and look up at the five-storied pagoda, then spend plenty of time with the steam locomotives and rolling stock at the Kyoto Railway Museum (京都鉄道博物館). Have lunch and a rest at Shiden Hiroba (市電ひろば) inside the park, then get into the water at Kawara Asobiba in the afternoon. The park has lawns and many stands of trees, so you can choose where to rest, which families appreciate. As a day out close to home that can be done entirely by train, it is easy to plan even without a car.
