The Akashi Kaikyo National Government Park Splash Pond (国営明石海峡公園 じゃぶじゃぶ池) in Awaji City is a water play area next to the Yumekko Land (夢っこランド) play equipment zone. The park officially states that "the splash pond is open from April to October," and it typically runs from Wednesday, April 1 to Saturday, October 31, with hours following the park's own opening times. Fountains and water guns mean children can do more than just soak in the water: they can spray it and get sprayed, playing actively, which is exactly what makes it fun. Because it is open from spring through autumn rather than only in midsummer, you can also use it simply to dip your feet once the heat has eased. Park admission is required, but it is free for junior high school students and younger, so families with children have almost no extra cost. The adjoining Yumekko Land is fully equipped with play structures, so you can switch between water and playground through the day: to the equipment when tired of the water, back to the water when you get cold. In the morning, visit the neighboring Hyakudan-en Garden (百段苑) at Awaji Yumebutai (淡路夢舞台), where 100 flower beds stacked in terraces up the slope and the sweeping view of Osaka Bay make for scenery you can only experience here. Then enjoy the plants and displays in the great greenhouse of the Miracle Planet Museum of Plants (奇跡の星の植物館), and spend the afternoon splashing to your heart's content at the Akashi Kaikyo National Government Park Splash Pond.
