2026 Toyohira River Green Space (豊平川緑地) Water Play Area: Full-Day Course

The Toyohira River flows through Sapporo from north to south. The place where you can play in the water on the green space along its banks is the Toyohira River Green Space Water Play Area. The site is the Toyohira River Green Space in Chuo-ku, Sapporo (near Minami 11-jo Nishi 1-chome), and use is free. The opening period for 2026 has not been announced; in past years it has fallen within the summer holidays. Unlike a park in town, here you spend the day wrapped in the wide sky above the river and the smell of grass on the embankment, which is the particular pleasure of a riverbank. In the morning, stop at the Sapporo Astronomical Observatory (札幌市天文台) in Nakajima Park (中島公園) and light up your children's curiosity with the telescope and the star exhibits. At lunchtime, move on to Sapporo Factory, which makes use of historic brick buildings, and take a proper break somewhere air-conditioned. In the afternoon, change into swimwear and head for the water's edge on the Toyohira River. It is within walking distance of Nakajima-koen Station and Horohirabashi Station on the subway, so you can plan the day without a car, which is the convenience of a riverbank in the middle of the city. Whether it opens also depends on the state of the river that day, so check the weather and the water level before you set out.
