2026 Akahogi Park Water Play Area: A Full Day of Fun
This is a full-day neighborhood outing course starring the Akahogi Park Water Play Area in Takayama City. This water play area is open from Friday, May 1 to Sunday, July 12, 2026, coming into its own in the season from early summer to just before the end of the rainy season. It is a waterside space created by making a former toddlers' pool shallower, and its big feature is that no swimsuit is required. You may bring toys such as water pistols and play freely, so it is easy enough to drop by in everyday clothes on a whim. Use is free. Note that from Saturday, July 18 to Sunday, September 6 the adjoining Takayama Municipal Pool (paid) is open, so during the summer holidays the flow is to use that instead. In the morning, start at the Miyagawa Morning Market (宮川朝市). Look over local vegetables and pickles at the stalls lined up along the river and savor the morning air of Hida. Next, head to Hida Kokubunji Temple (飛騨国分寺). The grounds, where a three-storied pagoda stands beside a great ginkgo said to be over a thousand years old, are the history of Takayama itself. Read in the cool at the Takayama City Library Kanshokan (高山市図書館 煥章館), then have lunch, and spend a relaxed afternoon playing in the water at Akahogi Park (赤保木公園). It is a day that combines a morning in the old castle town with an afternoon at a waterside on the outskirts.
