2026 Shimane Prefectural Hamayama Park Jabujabu Stream Full-Day Course
This is a course for a full day of play close to home, starring the Shimane Prefectural Hamayama Park Jabujabu Stream, which runs through the Forest Children's Plaza of Shimane Prefectural Hamayama Park (島根県立浜山公園) in Izumo City. It is an artificial stream flowing 160 metres through the shade of a black pine grove; water runs in summer and is turned off in winter. The 2026 opening period has not been announced, so please check the water status on the Shimane Prefecture website before you set out (in past years it has run during the summer holidays). The park, the play equipment and the Jabujabu Stream are all free of charge; only sports facilities such as the baseball ground and tennis courts require a fee. The Forest Children's Plaza has 43 pieces of play equipment, including items for toddlers and for people with disabilities, so children can keep playing at their own pace: playground when they tire of the water, water again when they tire of the playground. There is also an open lawn plaza, a fruit grove and a cherry blossom garden, and the real appeal of this park is being able to spread a picnic sheet in the shade and relax. In the morning, view the Izumo-style garden and wealthy farmer's residence at the Izumo Cultural Heritage Museum (出雲文化伝承館) within walking distance, then see local pottery and textiles at the Izumo Folk Art Museum (出雲民藝館) for a morning that feels distinctly of Izumo. Have a boxed lunch on the park lawn, and in the afternoon it is finally time for the Jabujabu Stream. With breezes through the pine woods and a shallow flow, it makes for an easy, cool outing close to home that lasts until evening.
