2026: A Full Day at the Shumoku Area Stream, Niigata Prefectural Toyanogata Park
The Shumoku Area Stream in Niigata Prefectural Toyanogata Park, in Chuo Ward, Niigata City, is a free water-play spot where you can walk through or sit down in the flow of an artificial river. The opening period has not been announced; the only official notice concerns the operation of the stream. For 2026, pump operation is announced to resume on Saturday, July 18, and from August 1 to August 31 the operating hours are extended from around 9:00 to around 17:00. The stream does not run when it rains, so check that day's operating status before you set out. Besides the stream, the Shumoku area has the Trim Forest with its playground equipment, a spacious main plaza and multipurpose plaza, a quiet Japanese garden, and the Shikisaikan Rest House for taking a break, so the hours outside water play are just as full. Rubber sandals for playing in the stream can be borrowed at the Shumoku Information Center, so forgetting your footwear is no cause for panic. In the morning, learn while moving your body at the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Natural Science close by, then head to the Shikisaikan Rest House in the park for lunch. In the afternoon, walk through the Japanese garden to cool off, then go straight on to the climax at the stream. It is a summer day that begins and ends in central Niigata City, balancing indoors and outdoors, learning and water play.
