2026 Sanko Elementary School Pool (三高小学校プール): A Full Day of Fun
This is a one-day course in Etajima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, centered on Sanko Elementary School Pool (Summer Public Opening) (三高小学校プール(夏休み一般開放)), which opens to the public during summer vacation from Tuesday, July 21 to Friday, August 7, 2026. It is open on weekdays only; it is closed every Saturday and Sunday and on August 6, with make-up opening days on August 10 and 11. In the morning, first visit the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force 1st Service School (former Naval Academy) (海上自衛隊第1術科学校(旧海軍兵学校)). Tour the vast grounds, where a Meiji-era red-brick office building and Great Auditorium are still in use today, on a guided tour held at set times. Next, move on to the Etajima Satoumi Science Museum (江田島市さとうみ科学館) and spend lunchtime observing creatures of the Seto Inland Sea up close. In the afternoon, head to Sanko Elementary School Pool. It's a 25-meter pool with no separate kiddie pool, but admission is free. You can swim freely in the quiet setting unique to a school pool. The history of a Seto Inland Sea island, the nature of its waters, and a school pool open to the community - this is a day that lets you touch the real face of Etajima.
