2026 Full-Day Course: Autumn Leaves at Oyama Afuri Shrine's Lower Shrine (大山阿夫利神社下社)
Spend a day enjoying the autumn colors on the mountain at Oyama Afuri Shrine's Lower Shrine (大山阿夫利神社下社) in Isehara City, known for the Oyama pilgrimage tradition. The leaves are typically at their best from mid to late November. Japanese maples along the approach and around the shrine buildings turn into a gradient of red, orange, and yellow, and the shrine grounds, at an elevation of about 700m, offer views all the way to the Sagami Plain. Nighttime light-ups have been held during the autumn foliage season in the past; in 2025 they ran from November 21 to 30, during which the Oyama Cable Car (大山ケーブルカー) also extended its evening operating hours (the 2026 schedule has not yet been announced, so please check the official website before visiting). A shukubo (temple lodging) stamp-and-quiz rally and a market along the old approach (旧参道マルシェ) have also been held during the same period in the past. Combining food-tasting along Koma-sando (こま参道) with the aerial cable car ride, this course lets families fully enjoy autumn at Oyama.
