2026 Jochiji Temple Autumn Foliage: A Full-Day Course
A day spent walking through late-autumn Kita-Kamakura, centered on Jochiji Temple (浄智寺), the fourth-ranked of Kamakura's five great Zen temples. Jochiji's autumn foliage usually peaks from late November to early December. The charm lies in the maples lining the worn Kamakura-stone approach, the ginkgo in front of Donkaden Hall (曇華殿), and the colors of the mountain at the back of the grounds, an entire valley (yato) landscape dyed in autumn hues. In the morning, visit Kenchoji Temple (建長寺), also in Kita-Kamakura. After exploring the grand halls of Kamakura's top-ranked temple, spend a leisurely afternoon enjoying the foliage at Jochiji. Admission is an easy 300 yen for adults and 100 yen for junior high school students and younger, and the compact grounds are easy to explore even with children. This course offers a quiet, characteristically Kamakura autumn, a little away from the tourist crowds.
