2026 Full-Day Course: Autumn Leaves at Shishimai (Tenen Hiking Course)
Spend a day walking Shishimai Valley (獅子舞の谷), one of Kamakura's hidden gems for autumn leaves. The best viewing period is typically late November through mid-December. This valley, located along the Tenen Hiking Course (天園ハイキングコース), is covered entirely in maple trees, and in late autumn fallen ginkgo leaves turn the mountain path yellow. In the morning, visit Kamakura-gu Shrine (鎌倉宮) and explore the remains of the Kamakura-era temple complex at the nationally designated historic site of Yofuku-ji Temple Ruins (永福寺跡). In the afternoon, follow the path along the Nikaido River (二階堂川) into Shishimai Valley. The mountain path is unpaved and can be muddy along the stream, so comfortable walking shoes are essential and strollers cannot be used. This is a hiking course for experiencing the autumn of Kamakura's mountains with your whole body, together with a child who can walk confidently.
