2026 Autumn Leaves in Hakone-Yumoto: A Full-Day Course
This is a day to enjoy a late-autumn foliage stroll in Hakone-Yumoto, the gateway to Hakone. Hakone-Yumoto sits at the lowest elevation in Hakone, and it's the area where the autumn colors arrive last, working their way down the mountains from Lake Ashi and Sengokuhara. The leaves are typically at their best from late November to early December. The hot-spring town and the promenade along the Hayakawa River turn color, and strolling around is free and open to everyone. In the morning, a 15-minute walk from the station brings you to Soun-ji Temple, an old temple built at the request of Hojo Soun's last will. In its quiet grounds, home to the graves of five generations of the Hojo clan and a dry landscape garden, you can get a taste of history. In the afternoon, head back to the hot-spring town and wrap up your late-autumn visit to Hakone with a relaxed walk along the Hayakawa River promenade and the souvenir shopping street. This is an easygoing family foliage-viewing course you can reach by train alone.
