2026 Full-Day Autumn Leaves Course at Kakuon-ji Temple
Spend a day enjoying quiet autumn leaves at Kakuon-ji Temple (覚園寺), an ancient temple standing deep in the valley of Nikaido, Kamakura. Tucked one step away from the heart of the sightseeing area, this valley temple is known as one of the places in Kamakura where the autumn leaves linger the longest, with the best viewing period usually from late November to mid-December. The maples on the grounds color the mountain-nestled temple complex. Admission is 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students. In 2025, a special autumn leaves viewing and light-up event was held from November 28 to December 10 (the 2026 schedule has not yet been announced, so please check the official announcement before your visit). In the morning, head from Kamakura Station toward Nikaido and visit Kamakura-gu Shrine (鎌倉宮), founded by Emperor Meiji. Enjoy the scenery along the approach as you walk the valley path, and Kakuon-ji Temple is just beyond. This course lets you get away from the crowds and take your time soaking in the mountain autumn leaves of Kamakura.
