2026 Mount Oyama & Afuri Shrine Lower Shrine (Oyama Cable Car): A Full-Day Cool Stroll Course
This is a day to enjoy the coolness of the mountaintop at Afuri Shrine Lower Shrine (阿夫利神社下社), which stands halfway up Mount Oyama (大山), the sacred mountain of Isehara City. Take the cable car from Oyama Cable Station (大山ケーブル駅) at the foot of the mountain, and it climbs the tree-covered slope in one go to Afuri Jinja Station (阿夫利神社駅). The air around the Lower Shrine, halfway up the mountain, is noticeably cooler than in the lowlands, and the mountain breeze passing through the trees feels pleasant. On clear days, the shrine grounds offer a view toward Sagami Bay (相模湾). The cable car's first departure is at 9:00, with the last departure at 16:30 on weekdays and 17:00 on weekends and holidays. Fares between Oyama Cable and Afuri Jinja are 640 yen one-way / 1,270 yen round-trip for adults, and 320 yen one-way / 640 yen round-trip for children. In the morning, the course stops at Koma-sando (こま参道), where souvenir shops line 362 stone steps, and Oyama-dera Temple (大山寺), an old temple known as a spot for autumn foliage, before spending the hot afternoon hours enjoying the coolness up on the mountain.
