2026 Tayanoana Cave (Jōsen-ji Temple) Cool Stroll: A Full One-Day Course
Spend a day enjoying the cool air inside Tayanoana Cave, a site connected to Jōsen-ji, a venerable old temple in Sakae Ward, Yokohama. Tayanoana Cave, formally known as Tayasan Yugadō, is a man-made cave whose walls and ceiling are covered from end to end with carvings of Buddhist statues and mandalas. It offers a coolness completely apart from the heat outside, so even in September and October, when warming temperatures keep the heat going, walking through the cave with a candle in hand is cool and quiet. Viewing hours are 9:00 to 16:30 (last entry 16:00), open year-round, with an admission fee of 400 yen for adults, 200 yen for junior and senior high school students, and 100 yen for elementary school students (elementary school students admitted only with a guardian). This course stops at Ōfuna Kannon-ji Temple, known for its white Kannon statue, near Ōfuna Station in the morning, then lets you fully enjoy the coolness of the cave during the hot afternoon hours.
