2026 Kakuonji Garden Walk: Full-Day Course
Spend a day enjoying the quiet at Kakuonji (覚園寺), tucked deep in a Kamakura valley and cradled by the greenery of Nikaido (二階堂). Being a little removed from the main sightseeing area, the temple grounds echo only with birdsong and rustling trees, offering the calm, unhurried time Kamakura is known for. Visiting hours run from opening at 10:00 AM to closing at 4:00 PM (last entry 3:40 PM). Admission is 500 yen for high school students and up, and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students. In the morning, visit Zuisenji (瑞泉寺), also in the Nikaido valley. The garden that Muso Soseki (夢窓疎石) carved into the bedrock is designated a National Site of Scenic Beauty as the only surviving Kamakura-period garden in Kamakura. In the afternoon, take your time exploring the grounds of Kakuonji. There are closure periods, including part of August (except for the Kuro Jizo Festival (黒地蔵縁日) on August 10), so please check the official website before you go.
