Rikubetsu is certified by the Ministry of the Environment as a 'Town of Starry Skies.' The Galaxy Forest Observatory is a public observatory equipped with one of Japan's largest 115cm reflecting telescopes, and stargazing is available without reservation during opening hours (13:00-21:30 from October to March, closed Mondays and Tuesdays with some exceptions). Admission is 500 yen for adults, 300 yen for children (elementary and junior high school students), and free for preschoolers. At the roadside station Aurora Town 93 Rikubetsu, you can view the decommissioned Furusato Ginga Line train cars and shop for local specialty products.
