About this spot

Known as the oldest temple in Tokyo and the symbol of Asakusa. Passing through the great lantern of the Thunder Gate and walking the approach lined with the Treasure House and leading to the main hall is especially magnificent in the morning light. A family photo with the five-story pagoda in the background is a classic not to be missed. Kids enjoy drawing fortunes and experiencing the sacred incense smoke, making it perfect for a family's first temple visit.

Tips

The temple grounds have few steps and are stroller-friendly. Before 9 a.m., the area around the Thunder Gate is uncrowded and photography is smooth. Restrooms are located on the west side of the main hall and near the Niten-mon Gate.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Most uncrowded around 9 a.m.
