View the Carvings of the National Treasure Shodendo, Known as 'Saitama's Nikko'

An ancient temple counted among Japan's three great Shotendo temples, the Shodendo main hall is Saitama Prefecture's only national treasure building. The vividly colored carvings covering the walls are so magnificent they are called 'Saitama's Nikko,' and restoration has revived the vibrant colors of old. As you tour with expert guidance, the stories embedded in the carvings become much more tangible.
Tips
Viewing the Shodendo carvings is in a paid area. Having a guide's explanation doubles the highlights. Trying different varieties of Shotendo-sushi (inari sushi) at the gate is also a specialty.
Best time to visit
60–90 minutes for viewing. The morning is relatively quiet for leisurely appreciation.
