Leisurely explore the Western building and gardens of this Meiji masterpiece in the evening

About this spot

A wooden Western building designed by Josiah Conder and built in the Meiji period as the main residence of the Iwasaki family, founders of Mitsubishi. The ornate interior, a separate billiards house, and a traditional sukiya-style Japanese building remain in a rare architectural ensemble. The Western building, viewed from the lawn in evening light, shines even more beautifully.

Tips

Entry closes 30 minutes before closing time. At the tea pavilion in the Japanese building, you can enjoy matcha tea and traditional sweets while viewing the garden. If you can catch a guided tour, you'll get explanations of highlights at no extra cost.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 1 hour. Evenings see fewer group visitors, making for a more peaceful visit.
