Three Generations Pay Respects to the Wisdom Deity Among Jingorō Hidari's Vibrant Carvings

About this spot

The guardian shrine of the Chichibu region, with a history spanning approximately 2,100 years. The shrine buildings, said to have been donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu, are adorned with vivid carvings attributed to master craftsman Jingorō Hidari, including "The Tied Dragon" and "The Three Wise Monkeys in Good Health." A complete circuit around the shrine grounds viewing the carvings alone is well worth the visit. As the shrine honors the deity of wisdom, it is perfect for prayers for children's academic success.

Tips

The grounds are flat and easy to navigate with a stroller. The carving hunt becomes an exciting treasure hunt for children. Banba-dori street near the shrine entrance has shops selling treats like Chichibu mochi.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 45 minutes. Morning visits are quieter with fewer pilgrims.
