An ancient shrine counted among Japan's three major Inari shrines. With a history spanning over 1,350 years, its impressive ceremonial gate and sculptural details on the main hall are well worth viewing. The temple gate town along the approach features shops selling inari sushi and chestnut confections—dining and browsing here is one of the pleasures. Each autumn, the grounds transform beautifully during Japan's oldest chrysanthemum festival.
Tips
It's helpful to have small bills and cash on hand for omamori (talismans) and offerings. Mornings attract fewer visitors and offer a peaceful atmosphere; gate-town shops typically open around 10 a.m.
Best time to visit
Allow 60–90 minutes. Early morning is quietest.
