Looking Up at a Stone Kannon Approximately 27 Meters High
About this spot
A great stone Kannon approximately 27 meters high, hand-carved into the Oya stone rock face to commemorate fallen soldiers and pray for world peace. You'll be overwhelmed by its size when viewing it from up close. You can climb a staircase beside it to reach an observation platform, where you can view the Kannon's face at eye level and enjoy a panoramic view of the Oya town. It's a free spot where you can experience the impressive scale unique to this stone town.
Tips
Located right next to Oya-ji Temple, just a short walk away. The staircase to the observation platform has handrails, but has steep steps, so hold hands with small children. Step back a bit to capture the entire figure in a photograph.
Best time to visit
Allow about 20 minutes. Not crowded even around midday.
