About this spot
Known as the residence of the Shibata clan lord, Mizoguchi family, this castle carries the alternative name 'Ayame Castle' and serves as the symbol of the castle town Shibata. The main gate and the old second-circle corner turret from the Edo period are designated as National Important Cultural Properties, and the sight of white walls and stone walls reflecting in the moat is picturesque from every angle. The restored three-tiered turret features the rare, nationally distinctive appearance of three shachihoko (golden dolphins) adorning the roof, making it the perfect subject from the moat's edge. The surrounding area is developed as a park, making a leisurely stroll around it in the crisp morning air a delightful experience.
Tips
Admission is free. There is a free parking lot in the adjacent Shibata Castle Park. Only external viewing of the three-tiered turret is available, so viewing from the moat's edge is recommended. In winter, access to the gate area is closed, so it's reassuring to check the open season in advance. The walking paths are flat and easy to navigate with comfortable shoes.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Early morning has fewer visitors and is ideal for photography from the moat's edge.
