Drive Along the Scenic Coastline and View Striking Rock Formations and the Sunset Over the Sea of Japan

About this spot

A scenic area designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, extending approximately 11 km along the Murakami coast. Striking rock formations and caves carved by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan create a stunning contrast with the transparent blue sea—one of Niigata's most spectacular vistas. Driving along National Route 345 by the sea offers excellent views, and stopping to explore sandy beaches and rocky areas is a pleasant experience. At dusk, the sunset sinking into the horizon tints the sea and rocks in shades of crimson, providing a landscape worthy of concluding your day of castle town exploration.

Tips

Approximately 30-40 minutes by car from the Murakami city center. Using the Roadside Station "Sasagawa-nagare" (attached to Kuwakawa Station) as a base makes parking and exploring convenient. Weather and season permitting, viewing the striking rock formations from a sightseeing boat (fee required) from the sea side is also recommended. The coastal area in the evening can be windy, so don't forget a light jacket.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Early evening when the sun is setting into the Sea of Japan is the optimal time.
