Sake tasting with coin in hand, comparing Niigata's local sake and exploring souvenirs from the region of rice
About this spot
A popular destination inside Echigo-Yuzawa Station showcasing Niigata's finest sake and food. At the signature sake-tasting corner, with coin and your own small cup in hand, you can sample and compare sake from various local breweries lined up before you, sipping small pours of each. The shop also offers plenty of souvenirs reflecting the rice-growing region, including large "bomb onigiris" (rice balls), confections themed around koji and fermentation, sake cups, and local seasonings. Located just beside the ticket gate, you can enjoy the space right up until your Shinkansen departure—a privilege of train travel.
Tips
Sake tasting costs around 500 yen per set, with coins purchased for the tastings. Sampling multiple sake is a unique benefit of train travel with no driving afterward. It can get crowded in the evening, so consider shopping for souvenirs first for a smoother experience.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour total. Work backward from your Shinkansen departure time to ensure you have plenty of time.
