About this spot
A five-minute sky-bound journey in a large gondola from the base of the sacred Hakkaisan mountain to the 4th station at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters. From the observation deck at the mountain station, you can take in the paddy fields of the Uonuma Plain and the ridge of the Echigo Three Mountains in a single view, and on clear days, a vast panorama stretches out where you can see distant mountains. Walking trails are developed around the mountain station, making it easy for families with children to enjoy the mountain scenery. The mountain landscape, changing with the seasons from verdant greens in summer to autumn foliage, never gets old no matter how many times you visit.
Tips
The area around the mountain station is cooler than the base, so be sure to bring a jacket you can layer. Operating hours vary by season and weather, so check the day's operating conditions before departing for peace of mind. Free parking available at the base. A baby carrier is easier to move around the observation deck area than a stroller.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 2 hours. The air is clearest in the morning, making distant mountains easier to see.
