Located in Kanaya Town, the birthplace of Takaoka metalcasting, this museum displays historical materials on metalcasting and actual tools used in the craft over the centuries. Learning about the history of Takaoka metalcasting—which began when Maeda Toshinaga invited metalcasters to the area—transforms your perception of the Daibutsu and copper items you saw earlier in the day. In front of the museum, Kanaya Town stretches out with its distinctive slatted lattice (samanokowork) facades and stone-paved streets, allowing you to combine a museum visit with an enjoyable walk.
Tips
From Yamamachi Street, it's approximately a 15-minute walk across the Senbo River. The stone-paved streets in places have copper fragments embedded within—a rewarding detail to notice while walking. Metalcasting and copper crafts make perfect souvenirs.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Evening's soft light casts the latticed townscape at its most beautiful.
