Family Tour of Scattered Village Life and the Wisdom of Traditional Buildings

About this spot

A museum conveying the landscape and lifestyle of the "scattered villages" (chiisho-son) of the Tonami Plain, where farmhouses surrounded by shelter forests (kainyo) are dotted across the landscape. You can easily learn about the formation of scattered villages through videos and models, and the grounds include buildings where you can feel the presence of traditional structures, allowing you to experience firsthand the wisdom of traditional dwellings. The landscape, like Japan's original scenery and different from the colorful tulips, is perfect for concluding your journey. As you tour while discussing with children "Why are the houses scattered about like this?" your understanding of Tonami deepens greatly.

Tips

Most exhibits are free to view, and parking is also free. It's about a 10-minute drive from Tulip Park. The authentic scattered village agricultural landscape surrounding the museum is also a sight worth seeing, and if you have time, a leisurely drive through the surrounding areas is recommended. Since there may be occasional closures, it's reassuring to confirm the opening schedule in advance.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1.5 hours required. Late afternoon, when light falls across the fields, the scattered village landscape is beautiful.
