Stroll through the small World Heritage settlement along the Shogawa River and photograph the full view from the observation plaza

About this spot

A World Heritage settlement where 9 gassho-zukuri houses nestle closely together on a small flat area beside the Shogawa River. Even more compact than Ainoura, it allows you to leisurely view the entire settlement in a short time. From the observation plaza beside the national highway, you can look down at the full vista of the settlement cradled by mountains and river—perfect for a signature Gokayama photograph. Within the settlement, you'll find souvenir shops and dining establishments, where simple mountain village time flows gently.

Tips

From the parking lot near the observation plaza (contribution fee required), you can descend to the settlement via elevator, making it safe even for those with concerns about mobility or those with baby strollers. The settlement is flat and easy to walk through, manageable for all three generations to complete a full loop without strain.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes required. In the afternoon, light from beyond the mountain ridgeline gently illuminates the settlement.
