Pass through the stained-glass shrine gate to pay your respects and stroll the gardens

About this spot

A shrine dedicated to Toshiie Maeda (前田利家), founder of the Kaga Clan, and his wife Omatsu-no-kata (お松の方). Located about 10 minutes' walk from Omichō Market, the unusual shrine gate blends Japanese, Chinese, and Western architectural styles and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The top features five-colored stained glass (ギヤマン) that glimmers beautifully against the blue sky. The grounds feature an elegant garden with a pond and bridge—perfect for taking a breath after the market's bustle. It's an easy way to enjoy a piece of Kanazawa's historical charm.

Tips

Admission is free. There are stone steps in front of the shrine gate, so you may need to carry strollers up. The compact grounds can be fully explored with a leisurely visit in about an hour, including prayer and garden stroll. The shrine gate's stained glass is beautifully illuminated after sunset.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The bright daytime hours showcase the stained glass colors beautifully.
