Savor the Towering Great Buddha, Hundreds of Small Buddhas on the Walls, and Views from the Five-Story Pagoda

About this spot

A colossal Buddha statue created as the main object of worship at Taishisan Seigoji Temple, towering over 17 meters in height—surpassing even the Great Buddha of Nara. Upon entering the Great Hall, you're overwhelmed by the massive statue before you and over a thousand small Buddha statues densely covering the walls. A five-story pagoda boasting one of Japan's greatest heights stands on the grounds, offering panoramic views of Katsuyama's city center and surrounding mountains from the upper levels. Including the temple-town-style approach, this is a signature Katsuyama attraction showcasing impressive scale.

Tips

Admission is ¥500 for adults with free parking. About 10 minutes by car from Heisenji, so it's recommended to stop for the local specialty grated buckwheat noodles in Katsuyama city center before heading here. The five-story pagoda can be accessed by elevator, so you can enjoy it even if you prefer not to climb stairs.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 45 minutes required. Afternoon is ideal for viewing the Great Hall.
