About this spot
One of Japan's few remaining castle towers that have survived since before the Edo period, and the only such precious castle in the Hokuriku region. It is characterized by a simple yet sturdy appearance with a roof covered in stone tiles. The steep stairs inside the tower require grasping rope to climb—a little adventure for children. From the top floor, you can see the entire Sakai Plain spread out before you. The castle also bears the alternate name Kasumi Castle (霞ヶ城) and is bustling with visitors during spring cherry blossom season.
Tips
The stairs inside the tower are quite steep, so for small children, have an adult support them from front and back. Strollers cannot be brought inside the tower, so leave them near the entrance before climbing. Admission tickets serve as a combined ticket with nearby museums and are a good value. Parking is free.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. Early morning is best—the tower interior is less crowded and easier to climb.
