Have lunch at the roadside station and play freely on the large playground and observation platform
About this spot
A symbolic park of Sabae known as a leading flower destination on the Sea of Japan coast, with approximately 50,000 azalea plants. The park's appearance changes with the seasons—azaleas in spring and colorful foliage in autumn—with an observation platform on the hilltop offering panoramic views of Sabae's cityscape. The large playground area featuring panda-motif equipment is hugely popular with children, offering plenty of space to run around and play. An adjacent roadside station at the foot of the hill is convenient for lunch and soft-serve ice cream breaks.
Tips
The Michi no Eki (roadside station) Nishiyama Park parking lot is convenient. The playground and observation platform have slopes and stairs, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Many families spread out picnic blankets on the lawn—having a mat makes for a more comfortable experience. On rainy days, a shortened plan that includes just a meal at the roadside station before moving on is recommended.
Best time to visit
About 1.5 to 2 hours required. For a smooth visit with lunch, arriving before noon is ideal.
